Hunts Point Hosts First-Ever Governor’s Deer Hunting Opener
Hunts Point hosted the first-ever Minnesota Governor’s Deer Hunting Opener Nov. 6-8. Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer and more than 100 media and special guests took part in the event, which was intended to highlight the economic impact deer hunting has on the state’s economy and its heritage, and how it carries with it the values of conservation, stewardship and camaraderie. Minnesota had about 500,000 licensed deer hunters this year.
The event, which was funded entirely by sponsors, started Nov. 6 with the Big Buck Community Dinner at Cragun’s Conference and Golf Resort. The next day, the Governor hunted on private land nearby, while about 100 members of the media and special guests participated in hands-on activities at Hunts Point. DNR officials made presentations and participants enjoyed air rifle and bow ranges, a black powder display, tree-stand safety displays and a habitat management tour.
Plans are already in the works for the Second Annual Minnesota Governor’s Deer Hunting Opener.
